What are noise cancelling headphones?

Many are all too familiar with the exhausting drone of a bus or airplane engine or the distracting sound of outside construction. Active Nose Cancelling headphones (also known as ANC headphones) use small microphones to detect outside sound. This background noise is then processed and converted into anti-sound waves. These are sound waves that are out-of-phase with the surrounding sound. When the two sound waves meet, they are effectively cancelled out. ANC technology is especially effective with deeper frequencies such as a droning motor or the hum or an air conditioner. This makes noise cancelling headphones perfect for travelling by bus, train or airplane.
ANC technology can be activated with or without playback so that you can enjoy your music without disruption, or simply envelope yourself in a peaceful oasis. Due to their active electronics, noise cancelling headphones require a battery. This battery can usually be recharged per USB cable.
